Your Dogs First day at Daycare: The Essential Guide to Your Pup’s First Day

Your pup’s first day at daycare is a big step! It can bring excitement, a few nerves, and most of all - plenty of tail wags.
At Oz Wagtails, we know how important it is to make that very first day of daycare easy, safe, and a positive experience for not only your dog, but you as well.
We've put together the ultimate guide that covers exactly what to expect, how to prepare, and how daycare benefits your dog’s wellbeing.
Preparing Your Dog for Daycare
Think of it like your pup’s first day of school: Preparation makes everything easier.
Vaccinations & Health Checks
To keep every dog in our care safe, we require pups to be up-to-date on their yearly vaccinations before joining the fun. All dogs need a C5 vaccination (covering distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, Bordetella, and parainfluenza) to attend daycare, this is also known as their "yearly" vaccinations.
If your dog has had an injury in the past or a recent surgery, we’ll also need a recent vet health check certificate or "fit to play" certificate, confirming that your dog is ready for group play.
Helping with Separation Anxiety
It’s normal for dogs (and humans!) to feel a little nervous on the first day. To help your pup:
Practice short “trial separations” at home, rewarding calm behaviour.
Stay upbeat at drop-off, dogs mirror your energy. The calmer and happier you are, the calmer and happier they will be.
What to Pack for Daycare
A collar and lead with a name tag
Lots of enthusiasm!
Pre-Daycare Socialisation
Introduce your dog to other pups at parks or classes beforehand. These little practice runs boost their confidence and make that first group play much smoother.
